The Ship Hector Tartan Company was formed to give the general public the opportunity to purchase various items and fabric in the Ship Hector tartan. The Ship Hector tartan was designed to commemorate the 189 brave souls who sailed on the Ship Hector in 1773, leaving Loch Broom , Scotland to build a "new life in a new land ".This voyage began a wave of Scottish immigration which made northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton truly Scottish. The tartan was designed by Janice Gammon of Lyon's Brook, Nova Scotia . It truly was a labor of love for Janice and she had no idea the tartan would be so well received. Each of the colors in the tartan has a special significance: WHITE- for the white caps and rough seas the Ship Hector endured. ROYAL BLUE- for the settlers' loyalty to their homeland of Scotland. GREEN- for the evergreen trees that grew to the waters' edge when the ship arrived. BLACK- for the lives lost on the journey. Gold- For the rising golden sun of a new day in a new land.
